South Sea pearls are rare and precious, they are grown in a giant oyster called Pinctada Maxima, they have record characteristics. Their size is greater than any other cultured pearl. They have a solid layer of pearlescent, a characteristic that makes it lasting for generations. They are so precious and refined that they have been called "Pearls Queens, Pearls of Queens".
The Pinctada Maxima can reach 25 cm in diameter and weigh up to 5 kg. It is a very delicate mollusc that lives deep (100 meters) has a high mortality percentage up to 80% of the specimens.
The colors vary from white to cream to golden yellow. The most valuable are the so-called gold. The cultivation takes place by inserting in the mollusc gonad a rigid mother-of-pearl core taken from a shell, and a fragment of the epithelium of an oyster Pinctada Maxima. The duration of cultivation varies from 20 to 24 months and the growth of the bud is about 2mm per year.
