Akoya Pearls are nucleated pearls made popular in the early 1900s, thanks to the cultivation method introduced by Kokichi Mikimoto. The oyster from which they come is the Pinctada fucata martensii, a mollusc of modest size that compared to other varieties can support up to a maximum of 3 nuclei grafted at the same time.
