The South Sea pearls are rare and precious, they are cultivated in a giant oyster called Pinctada Maxima, in fact they have record characteristics. Their size is superior to any other cultured pearl. The Pinctada Maxima can reach 25 cm in diameter and weigh up to 5kg. It is a very delicate mollusc, it lives in depth (100 meters) and has a high mortality rate up to 80% of the specimens.
The colors vary from white to cream to golden yellow. The most valuable are the so-called gold. Cultivation takes place by inserting a rigid mother-of-pearl core taken from a shell into the gonad of the mollusk, and a fragment of the epithelium of a Pinctada Maxima oyster. The duration of cultivation varies from 20 to 24 months and the growth of the bud is about 2mm per year.
