South Sea pearls are rare and precious, they are cultivated in a giant oyster called Pinctada Maxima, in fact they have record characteristics. Their size is larger than any other cultured pearl. They have a solid layer of pearlescent, a characteristic that makes them long-lasting for generations. They are so precious and refined that they have been called "Queens of Pearls, Pearls of Queens".
The Pinctada Maxima can reach 25 cm in diameter and weigh up to 5kg. It is a very delicate mollusc, it lives in depth (100 meters) and has a high mortality rate of up to 80% of specimens.
The colors vary from white to cream to golden yellow. The most valuable are the so-called gold ones. Cultivation occurs by inserting a rigid mother-of-pearl nucleus taken from a shell and a fragment of the epithelium of a Pinctada Maxima oyster into the gonad of the mollusk. The duration of cultivation varies from 20 to 24 months and the growth of the bud is approximately 2mm per year.
