Tahitian pearls are produced by the black-lipped oyster Pinctada Margaritifera, in Tahiti and throughout the archipelago of French Polynesia. This oyster is large and can reach, although in rare cases, 30 cm in length for a maximum weight of 5 kilos and can produce pearls from 8 up to 16-17 mm.
They have a wide variety of colors that range from intense black to light gray through shades of silver gray, copper gray, bronze green, blue and the most sought-after "Peacock", or peacock feathers, precisely because of the particularity of having iridescent multicolored reflections like peacock feathers.
South Sea pearls are rare and precious, they are cultivated in a giant oyster called Pinctada Maxima, in fact they have record characteristics. Their dimensions are greater than any other cultivated pearl. They have a solid state of pearliness, a characteristic that makes them last for generations. They are so precious and refined that they have been called "Queens of Pearls, Pearls of the Queens".
Pinctada Maxima can reach 25 cm in diameter and weigh up to 5 kg. It is a very delicate mollusk that lives at depth (100 meters) and has a high mortality rate of up to 80% of specimens.
The colors vary from white to cream to golden yellow. The most valuable are the so-called gold. Cultivation occurs by inserting a rigid nucleus of mother-of-pearl taken from a shell and a fragment of the epithelium of a Pinctada Maxima oyster into the gonad of the mollusk. The duration of cultivation varies from 20 to 24 months and the growth of the gem is approximately 2mm per year.
